NetPsy Email Listserv Guidelines

Contents

I. Agreement for Participating

NetPsy is a loose "sounding board" for professionals with an interest in applications of psychology on the Internet. As a subscriber, you agree to adhere to the following guidelines as a condition of your subscription:

II. Topics to be discussed on the NetPsy list

NetPsy is a place to discuss theory and practice of using the Internet for psychological applications such as therapy and counseling, crisis intervention, testing, research, support groups, etc. Listmembers are not permitted to use NetPsy as a means to seek clients or therapists for personal reasons. That is to say, no professional shall solicit his or her services nor shall a listmember seek the professional services of another on the NetPsy list. Such exchanges shall be considered to be "off topic". Some examples of relevant topics may include the following:

  • Interpersonal effects of current and evolving forms of online technology
  • New behavioral patterns evolving in online environments, manifestation of traditional human interactions as they occur online, such as email behavior, chat room behavior, and their foci, such as professional discussion, romance, or grieving
  • Influences of the online community in the daily offline and online lives of users
  • Limitations/benefits of visual or auditory feedback in interpersonal communications? (both group and individual)
  • Internet as a vehicle for psychotherapy, crisis counseling, and other professional interventions, including those related to disaster
  • Ethical and legal issues related to behavioral healthcare online
  • Online Behavioral healthcare demographics
  • Research related to all aspects of psychology and the Net, or psychology of Internet use
  • Funding sources for Net research
  • Technological advances impacting behavioral healthcare on the Net
  • Innovative uses of online technology to treat disorders as classified in DSM-IV
  • Online behavioral healthcare terminology and symbols
  • Reviews of online behavioral healthcare resource sites, lists, newsletters etc.
  • Self-help, support and moderated lists for group therapy
  • Online group dynamics
  • Financial aspects of professionals offering services online
  • Credentialing issues for professionals online

This list is by no means all inclusive. General guideline: if it concerns psychology and the Internet, it's a relevant topic.

III. If you choose to participate

You do not have to be a trained mental health professional to participate on this list. We encourage all points of view. We ask however that you do not hold yourself out to be a practicing clinician, either by implication or omission of fact, unless you are so credentialed.

Post a short introduction stating how you'd like to be addressed, what you do, your goals for joining us or what you are seeking from this list. Giving the specifics of your credentials, training, years in practice, and the exact nature of the service you deliver is required.

If possible, develop and use a signature file with your email that includes the state or country from which you work, your license number if you are licensed, and your full name and email address. If you are licensed, you must post your license number in your signature. Keep your signature files limited to no more than six lines. If you are unable to use a signature file, please post your name and credentials at the end of each post.

  • First you will receive a courtesy warning from the list owner or administrator, and possibly asked to refrain from posting to the list for a week. If you post nonetheless, you will be permanently removed from the list.
  • If for any reason you post a public complaint about the courtesy warning, however veiled, you will be permanently removed from the list.
