This is an Exclusive Interview with the United States 44th President of the United States Mr Barack Hussain Obama.
Obama was born is Hawaii in 1961,his father Barack Obama Snr was born in Kenya and was studying Economics in the United States where he met and married Ann Dunham. Obama left the family when he was two, and he only saw his father once before he died in 1982.
Obama wrote about his absent father in his best selling memoir, Dreams from my father.

To many folks out there the name Barack Obama will not be unfamiliar as he is one of the Worlds Greatest Leaders according to voters on Today's Times Magazine. Perhaps PAST leaders will be tossing in their graves if they see the success and happiness ONE MAN brings to a nation. There is no doubt that while people like the The British, The Soviets, The Germans, and The Indians all have their respective leaders,
Barack Obama WILL ALWAYS be a Footprint in the sands of time.
In a meeting held with Managing Director for Footprints Filmworks Omar Abdulla, Barack Obama says "One needs a powerhouse of commitment towards ones goals and ambitions" and "I'm asking you to believe not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington, I'm asking you you believe in your own potential."
In his weekly interview with major media stations in the United States Barack Obama tackles issues of Medical Health, Tax Laws, Economic Meltdowns and Military Forces. ............................
Page 2 Footprints Filmworks FF News: Bulletin Boards
In a question and answer debate held In Washington this weekend both parties Republican and Democrat the two big contenders for the Country election were being questioned for future trends.
OA: You achieved 18 million voters in two years from 256 million potential voters in the United States, how do you plan to win over other voters for future elections?
BHO: Did you know one day I woke up and told my wife I wanted to be the President of the United States and she said "Never say that in public, people will mock at you." And here I am today.

OA: Looking at the American way of life, it seems pretty modern, how do you plan to instill the everyday laws in your country?
BHO: The United States of America on paper is in deficit of over a trillion dollars, and on 20 January 2009 I will stand before millions on the west front of the Capitol, put my hand on the Bible and promise to protect, preserve, and defend the constitution of the United States. Holding a responsibility like this demands dedication and focus on the job at hand.
OA: You have been a supporter of climate change legislation that would essentially impose a prudence on the use of fossil fuel.
Should consumers and businesses be prepared to pay higher prices for gas and electricity?
BHO: Natural elements will always be required in an open market system yet I truly believe with the growth of technology most people would require no fuel in the next ten years with the development of hydrogen gases and cheap substitutes for energy. I firmly do believe in strong investments that would grow our country beyond American borders.
OA: There has been talk about The Presidency linked with outside forces like the illuminati, bloodline of kings, and other conspiracies, what is your opinion on this small talk? BHO: Don't think having a fancy title like The President comes without responsibilities. Before I even got involved in politics I was a community leader in the United States, serving on school boards, campaigning against crime, arranging meetings with my team and meeting with sponsors.
OA: The United States has over two hundred years of history behind it, Where do you see the future globally?

BHO: In the many speeches I have given I always talk about change. Change your life, Change your perceptions, Change your outlook. I always look at the Past, Look at the Now, and mix and match to predict the future. ..........................................
Page 3 Footprints Filmworks FF News: Bulletin Boards Advert
Footprints Filmworks Car of the Year 2008
At a time when the array of high-end cars is nearly limitless, selecting just one can be a confusing proposition. Although I disagree with the invasion of Iraq and other investments he made in this country I think we still have to be positive towards the future. President George Bush and I is like mixing oil and water.

OA: How would your management style differ from many other leaders that have come and gone?
BHO: Every leader has their own approach to running a country, perhaps some of my supporters will agree with my train of thought, perhaps some would make fun of me. Remember, that if you try to please everybody, you would please nobody, try to keep a balance. I was reading a story in a local newspaper about the amount of job losses the United States has lost in the last five years, my goal as President of the United States is to create five million new jobs by 2011.
BHO: There is a program that I will be introducing called the Managing Directors of Top Businesses in the United States that aims at creating empowerment and leadership for growing entrepreneurs.
OA: Any plans to visit Nelson Mandela in South Africa in coming years?
BHO:( laughs): Nelson Mandela will always be an icon to humanity. The country's founding myths are built upon stories of of P W Botha, Paul Kruger, Nelson Mandela and Cecil John Rhodes.
South Africa-The country occupies the Southern Tip of Africa and is bounded by South West Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland and by the Atlantic and Indian Oceans- West and East. South Africa entirely surrounds Lesotho and partially surrounds the F O U R black states of Transkei, Boputhatswana, Venda and Ciskei. (before their independance)
The country's history stretches 100 000 years and was ruled by the British from 1815-1948. Since, South Africa's independence from the British in 1948 the ruling party-The National Party ruled the country up until 1994 where F W De Klerk declared "Freedom to the Nation."
As the build up towards the country's elections on 22 April 2009 draws closer many parties are creating a ho ha in an effort to win voters support. Current President of South Africa Kgalema Motlanthe announced on February 10th that the fourth democratic elections should be "Free and Fair." Although Motlanthe's Presidency is expected to be short-lived his appointment as President from 25 September 2008 is due to end with the end of the elections in April.
The Footprints Filmworks Foundation is association with Today's Times Magazine have launched a full scale effort to promote the country's elections both locally and internationally.
"South Africa probably requires R700 billion rand to jumpstart the economy in terms of Financial Banking, Military Forces, Medical Sciences and The South Africa Reinvestment Act" says Group Economist for Citigroup Shaun Kells.
Kells(35) elaborates that the community of South Africa requires to take global lessons from world bankers including Alan Greenspan, Warren Buffet, Ben Bernanke and South Africa's own Tito Mbweni.

................................................................................................................................................
The Footprints Filmworks Foundation-[www.footprintsfilmworks.com]
..................................................................................................................................................
Page 2
FF News: Bulletin Boards
The Presidential Box
Billboards, stickers, websites, television studios, radio broadcasting, bulk messaging, exclusive interviews, and various creative methods are currently being used in a bid to promote the country's elections as well as the parties leaders.
Mrs Patricia De Lille Founder and President of the Independent Democrats speaks about "The eight step manifesto" which is a guideline her party follows.

Before going to press the footprints team researched the Political Parties of South Africa scheduled to partake in the fourth democratic election and found out that sixteen parties had enrolled on the IEC memorandum. According to the South African National Assembly, The African National Congress had 293 seats, The Democratic Alliance 47 seats, The Inkatha Freedom party 23 seats and The Freedom Front 4 seats.
The National Assembly has 400 members representing 16 political parties. The number of seats that a party has in the Assembly is in proportion to the number of voters that voted for it in the elections. For example, if a party won 40% of the vote, it will have 40% of the seats. The balance of power in the House can, however, be influenced by floor crossing. Floor crossing happens twice in a five-year term of the Assembly. During the floor-crossing period, a member will not lose his or her seat if he or she joins another party or starts his or her own party, subject to certain conditions. Parties may also decide to merge or subdivide in this period.
C H A N T I N G members of The African National Congress, The Democratic Alliance, The Inkatha Freedom Party, and The Freedom Front(Vryheidsfront Plus) take to the streets in a voice of "A better South Africa, A South Africa of Change"
One chanter told a footprints member " South Africa has more than 9600 communities, yet can our community of South Africa respect the needs, the values, the empowerment and the leadership of One President?"
According to sources The Presidency is linked with a consortium of institutional thinking brains, media personalities, financial gurus and key "Community leaders."
...................................................................................................................................................
The Footprints Filmworks Foundation-[www.footprintsfilmworks.com]
...................................................................................................................................................
Page 3
FF News: Bulletin Boards
The Presidential Box
Advert
Footprints Filmworks Travel Tours
.....................................The Holiday of your Dreams......................................
Enjoy the epic of your wildest dreams by touring with class, elegance, serenity and perpetual bliss. Discover the new world from our ancient myths for only R500.000-00 per person. Eight Months, Eight Countries, Eight Wonders.

1) Taj Mahal is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the world, and some Western historians have noted that its architectural beauty has never been surpassed. The Taj is the most beautiful monument built by the Mughals, the Muslim rulers of India. Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble. Its stunning architectural beauty is beyond adequate description, particularly at dawn and sunset. The Taj seems to glow in the light of the full moon. On a foggy morning, the visitors experience the Taj as if suspended when viewed from across the Jamuna river

2) The Great Pyramid at Giza is an awesome sight, thirty times larger than the Empire State Building(in mass), the Pyramid's features are so large they can be seen from the Moon. The oldest structure in existence, having been started 4,617 years ago, it is the sole remnant of the eight Wonders of the World.
The Great Pyramid did not always look as "rough" as it does today. Originally it was encased with a layer of tight-fitting, highly polished 20-ton stone slabs. W.M. Flinders Petrie determined the exact dimensions of the sides of the Pyramids and he found that they were almost exactly the same length to a accuracy of 0.1 +/- inch.

3) The Victoria Falls constitutes one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the World. The local people call it "Mosi-oa-Tunya" --the smoke that thunders and the Falls are remarkable.
The Victoria Falls is 1708 meters wide, making it the largest curtain of water in the world. It drops between 90m and 107m into the Zambezi Gorge and an average of 550 000 cubic meters of water plummet over the edge every minute. The Victoria Falls makes the footprints Third wonder of the world.

4) Leaning Tower of Pisa is a bell tower at Pisa, Italy. It is famous for leaning 141/2 feet (4.4 meters) out of line when measured from the seventh story. It tilts because its foundation was built on unstable soil (it's a well known fact that Pisa architects aren't so bright). Construction of the tower began in 1173 and ended between 1360 and 1370 (which means it's been around even longer than dad). The ground beneath the tower first started to sink after the first three stories were built.
In 1990, the tower was closed for repairs. At that time, its lean had been increasing an average of 1/20 of an inch (1.3 millimeters) per year. Engineers hope to stabilize the tower's foundation and straighten it slightly to prevent it from eventually collapsing and falling over (and yes, it is indeed open for tourists!). By 1994, their efforts had straightened the tower's lean about 2/5 of an inch (1 centimeter). No date for the reopening of the tower was scheduled.
..................................................................................................................................................
The Footprints Filmworks Foundation-[www.footprintsfilmworks.com]
...................................................................................................................................................
Page 4
FF News: Bulletin Boards
The Presidential Box
Advert
Footprints Filmworks Travel Tours
.....................................The Holiday of your Dreams...........

5) The Eiffel Tower was built for the International Exhibition of Paris of 1889 commemorating the centenary of the French Revolution. The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII of England, opened the tower. Of the 700 proposals submitted in a design competition, Gustave Eiffel's was unanimously chosen
At 300 metres (320.75m including antenna), and 7000 tons, it was the world's tallest building until 1930. The Eiffel Tower is the footprints team's fifth wonder of the world.

6) Located on a 12 acre island, the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.

7) Mecca is the most holy city in Islam. The city is revered from being the first place created on earth, as well as the place where Ibrahim together with his son Isma'il, built the Ka'ba. The Ka'ba, the centre of Islam, is a rectangular building made of bricks. Around the Ka'ba is the great mosque, al-Haram, and around the mosque, in between the mountains, are the houses that make up Mecca.
r
8) Completed in 1913, Pretoria's Union Building are one of the most recognized buildings in South Africa. The Union Building itself is not open to the public, as it houses the offices of the President of South Africa. But the building's impressive architecture and beautiful surrounding gardens are well worth the visit.

The Union Building is made of sandstone and is 275 m long. The two wings at either end were intended to represent the bilingual nature of the country, and symbolized the unity that these two cultures had achieved since the Anglo Boer War.

Footprints Filmworks Travel Tours
(012) 3743553
.............................The Holiday of your Dreams.....................
..................................................................................................
The Footprints Filmworks Foundation-[www.footprintsfilmworks.com]
..................................................................................................................................................
Page 5
FF News: Bulletin Boards
The Presidential Box
F W De Klerk who lead South Africa as President from 1989-1994 chats to Omar Abdulla from Footprints Filmworks regarding his ideas about the future of South Africa

Frederik Willem de Klerk was born in Johannesburg on March 18, 1936. He is the son of Senator Jan de Klerk, a leading politician, who became minister in the South African government. His brother Willem is a liberal newspaperman and one of the founders of the Democratic Party.

F.W. de Klerk graduated with a law degree from Potchefstroom University in 1958 and then practiced law in Vereeniging in the Transvaal. In 1969, he married Marike Willemse, with whom he has two sons and a daughter. De Klerk was offered a professorship of administrative law at Potchefstroom in 1972 but he declined the post because he had been elected to Parliament as National Party member for Vereeniging at the time.
Omar Abdulla from Footprints Filmworks was the first Indo-Asian in South Africa to produce a local documentary on a community called Laudium-Footprints In Laudium. Omar Abdulla together with the footprints team are currently producing Footprints In South Africa which is a feature length film comprising of leaders and community folks from the community of South Africa. Footprints In South Africa is due for release in 2009 with an expected audience of over 50 million.

Omar Abdulla: Thank you for joining us on Footprints In South Africa, Welcome to our Presidential Box.
F W De Klerk: Thank You for having me.
Q1) Omar Abdulla: What is your opinion in the in which South Africa is lead?
F W De Klerk: I always seem to get into trouble when I'm asked about our country, yet I truly believe South Africa has a long way to go in terms of our democracy. Our democracy is a mere fifteen years old-hence we should take baby steps towards the empowerment of our community. In my opinion the new brats on the block like Jacob Zuma, Lekota, De Lille, and Farouk Essop have still some growing up to do.
Q2) Omar Abdulla: You mentioned "The new brats on the block" what's your opinion on new president elect-Barack Obama?
F W De Klerk: Barack Obama is a "speech contest winner." I have no idea what knowledge he has on The United States or if he has the sufficient "Leadership Qualities." Personally, I think Barack Obama should of been elected as the next President of the United States and given Joe Biden the opportunity to uphold the flag.
Q3) Omar Abdulla: From the days you were President of South Africa to Today's Times, where do you think their is scope for growth in our community?
F W De Klerk: Our society of South Africa WILL ALWAYS have challenges that we will come across. It's imperative that we keep to our roots, our foundations, our history and our visions for the future. My vision would be to live to the day I see South Africa crime and corruption free. It is unfortunate that today's politics is riddled with sharks who dress in suites.
..................................................................................................................................................
The Footprints Filmworks Foundation-[www.footprintsfilmworks.com]
..................................................................................................................................................
Page 6
FF News: Bulletin Boards
The Presidential Box
Q4) Omar Abdulla: If you were to compare The South African Law amongst other major countries what would your opinion be?
F W De Klerk: If you have a glance at the South African constitution it is rated one of the best in the world. Myself, and other colleagues helped assemble it in 1993. The South African constitution makes provision for freedom amongst all nationalities and all colors of our rainbow nation. Perhaps we should take a few straws out of the hats of the Arabian community as well.
Q5) Omar Abdulla: On a L I G H T E R note, briefly elaborate about your personal life these days?
F W De Klerk: Well, I am 72 years old, I have been President of South Africa, I have a good home and awesome family. The way I spend my days is by shopping at Pick and Pay, playing golf with a few mates of mine, taking long walks, and watching the News @ 7 on SABC 3.
Q6) Omar Abdulla: Thank you for that, in my opinion I think our sports in South Africa requires that special "Ernie Els" touch don't you think?
F W De Klerk: I have always been a supporter of s p o r t s in South Africa. I believe we still have a long way to go in terms of competition. Take Bafana Bafana as an example-I think they should improve their game tremendously and include more "whites" in their national team. I also believe the Protea's will give the Aussies a run for their money when they tour our country in March. I also would like to suggest that more women should get involved in sport.
Q7) Omar Abdulla: Looking at the housing market in South Africa, prices have been volatile over the past decade, where do you see housing prices by 2015?
F W De Klerk: South Africa has provided for more than 4.3 million housing subsidies' in the past ten years. The big F O U R banks should probably tighten their belts when it comes to financing. Skyscraper buildings, bridges, highways and the development of the Gautrain would sustain South Africa's growth and hopefully reduce the high volume of traffic on our roads.
Q8) Omar Abdulla: Whilst you were President of South Africa from 1989-1994, what were your greatest challenges?
F W De Klerk: I took each day on merit, worked hard and kept to my parties promises. I was never a dictator, I simply lead from the front. The citizens of our community will always complain when it comes to leadership and how we manage our country. It's important to keep track of our goals, re plan and act again.
Poetry as Equipment for Living (2 replies)

IS IT HAPPENING AGAIN?

In his ninth eclogue Vergil dramatises poetry's growing ineffectiveness in the years following the collapse of the Roman Republic in 31 B.C.. The poem examines the growing failure of poetry as equipment for living, as a significant force in the lives of those who have heard it. Poetry as equipment for living meant to Vergil the singing of old songs an activity which helped to establish a cameraderie that lifted the spirits. Much has been written about this eclogue focusing on the composition, nature and subject matter of pastoral poetry.1 My focus here in this poem, however, is not the composition of poetry, but rather poetry’s extension into new forms and its reception by new audiences, its function and use in the lives of those who read it and remember it and imbibe it in a host of new forms in this twenty-first century. –Ron Price with thanks to 1Andrew Becker , “Poetry as Equipment for Living: A Gradual Reading of Vergil's Ninth Eclogue,” Classics Ireland, Vol.6, 1999.

Poetry has widened its ambit
and, in these days of ours,
these latter-days, end times,
hours of apocalypticism,
in song, TV, DVD, CD,
radio, hi-fi and in the poetic
of several dozen disciplines:
poetry is everywhere holding
people’s lives together
like one vast coat of many
colours keeping the package
snug. But security, security
for this failing world, from
the slings and arrows of fortune
can not be found in all these
extensions of poetry into new
lands, fields, gardens, walks of life,
only a chalice, a wine of pure utterance
and the warblings of the birds of heaven.

Ron Price
July 13th 2005

Joanne's (tu)(tu)(tu) Jo-Jo Awards (26 replies)

Hey - what a little treasure of a Forum! Thank you SHM!!

I will take El Gregg's lead (thank you for the inspiration, Gregg ) and start my own thread about my favs through time.

Please - I invite you to comment on whatever you see here. Be my guest - tickets are free!

A Little Background to Establish My Movie-Critiquing Credentials (:P)
As a kid, my parents would gather with their friends every Sunday afternoon. And I mean EVERY Sunday afternoon. All us kids would get dropped off somewhere. We never questioned it as it seemed to accommodate the needs of both the adults and us kids.

Since I grew up in the Northeast, that means 9 months of the year, I was at the downtown movie house, roller-rink or park. Since the big kids at the roller-rink sort of scared me with their speed-skating, and I never was very able to tolerate the cold, my preference was always be the movies. I wasn't such a great skater, but I was a wonderful popcorn or Pom-Pom eater (:P)

But I was all-too-often forced to go to the rink because my sib, or friends, or cousins or someone insisted. Occasionally, someone would get the really bright idea of sending us off to the park for sledding or ice-skating, where I always ended up with frozen fingers and toes and huddled by a fire-in-a-trash-can, dodging the smoke, for what seemed like days until that dang parental car finally showed up.

This was before the days of cell phones, so once you got out of any car, you were on your own. No one ever dreamed of calling home. Besides, we weren't given enough money for a call. We were expected to take care of ourselves, and be at a designated spot, at a designated time.

The Theater Was Always My Favorite Spot!
It was always filled with kids shooting straw wrappings at each other, soon to be followed by spit-balls-on-the-neck and flying popcorn (which I always considered a big waste of a precious commodity).

We'd occasionally get a kid who would shake up a soda can and spritz it into the throng of kid heads. That's when everyone yelled and the ushers with flashlights would appear. They'd question us all with the flashlight in the face routine, and eventually yank someone out of their seat, only to throw them outside, a fate worst than death to me!!

Now I just couldn't BELIEVE it when some idiot kid would empty a perfectly fresh box of Glosette raisins into the crowd - flinging them in the air like they were nothing!! Spoiled brats... tsk-tsk-tsk - pearls before swine. THEY would upset me almost as much as soda in my hair :X

Fountain sodas were my preferences, since I couldn't be wrongfully accused of spritzing anyone with those, but I will confess to hurling my fair share of juicy spit balls at some unknown kid or other.:D

I think the first movies that I can conjure up as truly memorable had to do with space travel and westerns. Some guy in red tights flying around, a lot of tin looking space craft, guns, rifles, horses. Yeah, that sums it up.

Oh the cartoon clips at the beginning were always waaay better than the movies themselves. I just loved all the commotion and activity of the pre-movie Bugs Bunny and Road-Runner clips. It was just a blast!! I think they used those clips to get us to settle down at pay attention to the screen rather fool around all afternoon with food-fights.

One final comment: our home-town theater didn't show us any classics - it was a place for kids and nothing but kid-flicks were shown. (tu)

Drive-In Experiences
The local drive-in had a more family-oriented selection, but I can't recall the movies at all. The feel of wearing my jammies outside in the warm summer evenings, the sizzling hot dogs in their buns that my Dad would bring back to the car, and padding over to the Kiosk to use the rest room are about all I remember. Oh, the strong smell of buttered popcorn permeated the air, too.

I guess my early memories of moves all involve food and primarily food...interesting, n'est pas?? So much for my early movie critiquing. If it didn't involve snacks, I simply wasn't interested - ahhh, the good old days!!! Limited only by the $$ I could spend (:P)

When I was old enough to drive and go on dates, the films were less of a draw than how many girls we could fit into one car, who was there with who, or my own first dating experiences with ice-filled speakers and heaters that you'd hold up with your car window.

Oh, I remember some boy leaning over to kiss me in his car, and in my nervousness, I tipped over a full large-size coke into his gear box. He was a Type A sorta guy, had probably spent the entire day waxing his car. He not only lost all interest in kissing me, but he kept mumbling that coke was a corrosive and how I had messed probably up his transmission.

Hey, he was older than me; it was his coke (two straws); and if he was such a "big expert" at drive-in dates and kissing in his car, he mighta thought about the lack of elbow room?? He never called for a second date -_- Too bad, he was cute :*

Fast - Forward to 1969
Then new-fangled-theater-enhancements became the vogue as malls sprung up in neighboring big towns. Surround sound and multiple screens came into being.

I clearly remember seeing a 10-foot rocking face of Richie Havens (with no front teeth) screaming/singing "Freedom" over-and-over again in a documentary of Woodstock. Equally big side screens showed people milling about with blankets on their backs, and other bands prepping for their turn on stage. It was wild, and it was great. B)

That 1969 Woodstock documentary was by far the most memorable, eye-opening, mind-expanding experience of my early movie-going career! It's the first movie I sort of clearly remember, and the one that gets my first award:

Woodstock gets the (tu)(tu)(tu) Jo-Jo Award!

El G's flick and book reviews (94 replies)

Let me start by saying I began reading comics and watching movies in the early 50's. My folks didn't have a tv, just a scratchy radio where I listened to the Lone Ranger. I went to the movies every Saturday in a small dusty southern town. My mom would give me a quarter and say, "don't spend it all in one place." But I did, I spent it at the movie theatre. The blessing in all this was my ability to fantasize about the unseen. I was a kid who did without and used sticks for guns. I read all the comics in those days, no fan of Superman or Batman though. I liked Uncle Scrooge, Donald Duck and Daffy and did not like Mickey and Minnie.
My taste in movies defined what I later would become. An outstanding Marine. I didn't like the singing Cowboys, Gene and Roy because they were sissified. Gene was soft, and Roy had Dale. I didn't care for girls or singing. I liked Lash LaRue, he dressed in black with a bullwhip and no nonsense. My folks would take me to romantic movies at the drive-in an I would sleep thru them in the back seat.

My life without tv gave me the gift of mental fantasy. It was the same gift that has allowed me to endure this life of Reality. The world of Psychology had never been more prevalent than in El Greggo's world of movies and books. I forget nothing. The Good, Beautiful, Bad and Ugly in film and books. Thru film and books, I once saw what I desired to become, then later, saw more clearly what I had become. I'm a lover today, no longer a fighter. Action flicks is not my thing, and I could have left with the French Connection car chase and never saw another. I enjoy films with a message of psychological reality today. Dumb and Dumber works only once, never again please Will Ferrell. Carey did it marvelously, so no copying him for the almighty buck.

My daughter read Gone with the Wind about 10 times. I ask her why? She said "it's you and Mom made over." I wondered if that left some good or bad imprint on her life? Was seeing us as Rhett and Scarlet a good thing? It was quite a traumatic and dysfunctional marriage.

I often see characters on screen or in books as people I know or have known in the real world. Don't you? Scarlett had moments where she was my wife for sure. Rhetts drunken desire to squeeze Ashley Wilkes from her life, was that Gregg? My daughters dad?

Did you see Patton with George C. Scott? He had some memorable lines, true or not of Patton. One was his line, "you won't have to tell your grandkids that you shovelled ____ with the greatest War in Mankind going on." Yeah, that's right, I won't. The other was, "don't die for your Country, make the other guy die for his." I take exception to that one. You are most effective in combat if you toss away self worth and willing to give it all up."

Let the Games begin, Gregg

Let me get the ball rolling by reccommending and oldie but goodie book if you haven't read it. It's historical in content, but heart rendering as well. Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown. One of my all time favorites and while written from the Native American slant, it gives you the other side of the Indian Wars. They made an HBO special which is still running but read the book first. Much talk and much written about Slavery in America, but this genecidal slaughter of a people and way of life is put on the back pages. Their tragic forced march to barren lands, loss of life, is brilliantly woven in word by Brown.

Gregg

I've already seen the trailer on the net and Gore does an excellent job in presenting the material. One of my friends, a retired physician spent several weeks in Iceland this summer and he said, ' If you know anyone who doubts global warming, tell them to come see me". He has pictures and he said it was terribly depressing to see the landscape destruction. BBC news had an interesting, as well as frightening article on Arctic perennial ice melt and the pictures/maps were astonishing. From 2004 to 2005, more than 14 percent of ice was lost. That's a tremendous amount of ice- the size of Pakistan or Turkey! What this means to us is that we will have an enormous amount of water vs. ice wich will only further add to increasing global temperatures. You can view this article and the maps at [news.bbc.co.uk]

Sherwood, I know you're a a proactive consumer/citizen in favor of environmental protection and know quite a bit about global warming. Strange, in that my father never sees movies. I can't imagine a life without flicks and film. A movie allows us to live in another life, we may never partake of or know of. It lets us know we're not alone out here, with our joy, dificulties, trials, family matters etc.

My all time fav movie is "The Best Years of Our Lives." A late 40's or early 50 movie in black and white. An academy award winner starring Fredric March. About three servicemen returning from WWII, a sailor with no hands, a soldier and an airman, who catch the same cab in their hometown, and the story begins about how they cope with a new life. Nothing short of brilliant in screenwriting, play and acting. A jewel that stands on its own today and forever with rellevance.

Chick Flicks (13 replies)

I enjoy chick flicks, despite being a macho guy. I enjoy that feminine touch, especially if the movie entails some fashion. Saw 'the devil wore prada' with Streep today. She was nothing short of magnificent as usual, as a demanding, overbearing, sharp tongued editor of a fashion magazine. What a performance! This is another look for Streep, who seems to master any character she portrays. The movie has a couple of memorable sequences, like her assistant, a jornalism major who just happens to take a job in fashion. She cries over Steeps treatment of her in one scene, when she seems to have had enuff of her bossy b. A clever, entertaining gay designer, gives her no compassion, and tells her to quit snivelling and get with the program or quit, confronting her own decisions in life while taking this job.

Another comes when a male entrepeneur tells the beautiful assistant her boss is a ruthless B! She in turns asks him if she were a male, would the appraisal be so harsh, or would she be seen as masterful in her profession?
