Afghan War (7 replies)

Now we come to this. How did we get here from the beginning in 01? Remember how easy it was back then? 8 years of war and now things seem to be heating up. This is only an Opinion from my brilliant mind.

There were War Lords back in 01 who fought with and for us who now fight against us. The mood and air in Afghanastan has changed dramatically. O's General wants many more troops to stem the tide and say it's dire and urgent to send them.

Some of the answers are rather simple and you only have to study history. Let's begin by studying the Vietnam War which has become the poster war for studying both Iraq and Afghanastan despite major differences in culture, landscape, allies on both sides, and most importantly the people.

Soldiering and war technology has become more professional, let's say, than more than 40 years ago. Makes no difference overall, why? The enemy is using the same strategy used by Ho and same weaponry. We've Overstayed our Welcome. It is almost impossible to occupy a foreign land without total support of the people of that land. The longer one stays, the more enemies abound. Eventually they do not like you, like they once did. Many reasons for this but you start with clashing cultures and religious beliefs.

Should O send more troops into the fray? Toughie.
You send them like Johnson did, and you run the risk of more casualties and deepening war, which may end for the worse. O doesn't send them, and the Taliban takes over with new T camps and it lands on the Prez's desk in history as a blunder.
The Quagmire is being established.

The Media Wars (no replies)

For the first time since I can remember, we have an official Media War. O'reilly and Fox have been sending some blasts in the direction of not only the major networks but CNN. Rick Sanchez blew his cool yesterday by delivering a heated reply in the form of an editorial directed at Fox. The current war involves the lack of coverage of the recent tea party or protestors against the Healthcare Plan.

Sanchez is seen as having an ax to grind. The problem with his loud, aggressive, pointed reply towards Fox on Wolf's show, the Situation Room, was that he was yelling at us the viewers, not Fox. He needs to take his problem to Fox, not the CNN audience. He was obviously wrankled, but has been for some time. O'reilly does a Jon Stewart type of thing on occasion. But he once mumbled a rather sarcastic remark about Sanchez and you know Sanchez was at least told about it. Then there's the Acorn situation and Sanchez sort of kissing up the ceo of Acorn while O'reilly goes after them and now, O'reilly and Fox seem to be right.

You can actually feel the undertow of bad blood beween these two networks. Although some pretend there's nothing really to it? Yes, we watch and see it, hear it. Glen Beck has only added to the wars, switching teams and currently having a blast with a new show. He's even on the cover of Time. It's O'reilly, Beck, Hennity, the big 3, vs. Sanchez, Cafferty, Cooper and Wolf their waterboy. The Republican surrogates who debate against the Libs on CNN are lackies and seldom take issue with Carville's laugh and giggles machine. Weak opposition. O'reilly does invite every liberal who wants to debate. But O'reilly is part blowhard, he gets louder and drowns out the opposition although I normally root for him.

I grew up with him on the tube around dinner time.

He spoiled my view of him with that journalistic tidbit during the Nam War. Some herald him for it, I don't. He was pushing his career along. Regardless if he felt he was reporting the truth or not, it was his Opinion, and that Opinion helped our enemy. I knew full well, long before Cronkites famous report about the Stalemate War, that the War was going South on us, but his report helped nothing. It did not end the war. It may have sent Johnson packing and probably helped him make up his mind. It sent more protesters in the street maybe? But it just gave new heart and merit to the enemy.

During Tet, the enemy won nothing, except opinion in America with the liberals and protesters. Cronkite was their beacon boy. Take nothing away from his stellar reporting in his career, and many journalists herald him. He spoiled it for me, and I think he got more credit than he deserved for that famous report out of Vietnam.

Gregg

It's got this Political aura to it. Even the Prez himself said the release of info was "to put this phase behind us." How so? You hardly put this behind you by placing it on the table. Obama ran on the continuance of the War on Terror, in fact just sent an additional 4 thousand troops to join the additional 17k troops he already sent to Afghanastan to fight terrorists. Are we becoming weak apologists in the new era? War has a tendency to drain ones will to fight. However, I see this new approach as nothing more than weakness, and a need to be popular with the Euro nations. Obama loves addulation and rock star imagery. It will be amazing if he can keep a grain of that after 4 years in a world where America has never been popular. His newsltter has a few choice references this month, which I am going to share with you (:D.

One is about the Vermont Law School (www.VermontLaw.edu), which has chosen to set an example rather than accept money. In these times of tight budgets and loose laws, this law School stands apart from the crowd.

As Dr. Klein wrote in his March 3rd newsletter:

Vermont Law School is one of only two U.S. law schools that bar military recruiters from campus. Their reason: the discriminatory nature of our government's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy, which prevents openly gay Americans from serving in the military.

The school's ban on military recruiters disqualifies them from certain federal funding--so VLS is really putting their money where their mouth is. They are showing their students that the practice of law requires just laws--and that just laws often require social action.

Reprinted from Sexual Intelligence, © Marty Klein, Ph.D. (www.SexualIntelligence.org).

Captain Sully and his heroics with split second thinking. However that memorable Hudson landing, which brought us strength when we needed it, was followed by a tragedy with the crash and death of 50 people in Buffalo.

They already seem to know the root cause of the Buffalo tragedy, "icing" on the wings. But these jets are equipped with modern de-icing technology. Did the pilots not de-ice soon enough? Seems to be the thinking. The jet was on auto-pilot so they say, which means the de-icing would have to be done manually and separately. I hate to suggest pilot error here, we don't know yet, but if de-icing of this nature downed airliners, this wouldn't be the exception that it is. Did the plane have 2 pilots? Not sure. I know about the young lady pilot, was she too young to handle this?

The Hudson situation brings other simpletonian questions also, like why hasn't this happened before now. Canadian geese have been flying and flocking since time. This was over LaGuardia, so why just this one plane, and wouldn't this still be a hazzard as we speak?

Those big turbin engines are tested to handled 4 lb bird strikes. A geese weighs around 12 lbs, and uh oh! Have all these geese moved away from La Guardia now? Bird strikes are common place and I did not know this until this mishap. Kudos to Capt. Sully but still some questions here. Have you any idea how many planes are in the air at all times everywhere in the world? And this one time, the geeses are sucked into these engines?

As you may know, the engines acted up just a few days before the geese entered them on this particular airliner. Passengers noted the noise, and this airliner went back up according to the news.

Disaster Capitalism for Dummies (8 replies)

PAUL B. FARRELL

Wall Street's 'Disaster Capitalism for Dummies'
14 reasons Main Street loses big while Wall Street sabotages democracy
By Paul B. Farrell, MarketWatch

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. (MarketWatch) -- Yes, we're dummies. You. Me. All 300 million of us. Clueless. We should be ashamed. We're obsessed about the slogans and rituals of "democracy," distracted by the campaign, polls, debates, rhetoric, half-truths and outright lies. McCain? Obama? Sorry to pop your bubble folks, but it no longer matters who's president.

Why? The real "game changer" already happened. Democracy has been replaced by Wall Street's new "disaster capitalism." That's the big game-changer historians will remember about 2008, masterminded by Wall Street's ultimate "Trojan Horse," Hank Paulson. Imagine: Greed, arrogance and incompetence create a massive bubble, cost trillions, and still Wall Street comes out smelling like roses, richer and more powerful!

Yes, we're idiots: While distracted by the "illusion of democracy" in the endless campaign, Congress surrendered the powers we entrusted to it with very little fight. Congress simply handed over voting power and the keys to trillions in the Treasury to Wall Street's new "Disaster Capitalists" who now control "democracy."

Why did this happen? We're in denial, clueless wimps, that's why. We let it happen. In one generation America has been transformed from a democracy into a strange new form of government, "Disaster Capitalism." Here's how it happened:

Three decades of influence peddling in Washington has built an army of 42,000 special-interest lobbyists representing corporations and the wealthy. Today these lobbyists manipulate America's 537 elected officials with massive campaign contributions that fund candidates who vote their agenda.
This historic buildup accelerated under Reaganomics and went into hyperspeed under Bushonomics, both totally committed to a new disaster capitalism run privately by Wall Street and Corporate America. No-bid contracts in wars and hurricanes. A housing-credit bubble -- while secretly planning for a meltdown.
Finally, the coup de grace: Along came the housing-credit crisis, as planned. Press and public saw a negative, a crisis. Disaster capitalists saw a huge opportunity. Yes, opportunity for big bucks and control of America. Millions of homeowners and marginal banks suffered huge losses. Taxpayers stuck with trillions in debt. But giant banks emerge intact, stronger, with virtual control over government and the power to use taxpayers' funds. They're laughing at us idiots!
Amazing isn't it, Wall Street's Disaster Capitalists screwed up, likely planned or let happen this meltdown and recession. Yet America's clueless taxpayers just reward them by giving the screw-ups massive bailouts, control over more than $2 trillion of tax money, and the power to clean up the mess they made. Oh yes, we are dummies!

This end game was planned for years in secret war rooms on Wall Street, in Corporate America, in Washington and the Forbes 400. Democracy is too cumbersome. It had to be marginalized for Disaster Capitalism to take over. Reagan, Bush and Paulson were Wall Street's "Trojan Horses."

Naomi Klein summarizes the game in "Shock Doctrine: the Rise of Disaster Capitalism." This "new economy" generates enormous profits feeding off other peoples' misery: Wars, terror attacks, natural catastrophes, poverty, trade sanctions, subprime housing meltdowns and all kinds of economic, financial and political disasters. Natural (Katrina) or manmade (Iraq), either way "disaster capitalism" creates fortunes.

So you, me and the other 300 million better get out of denial. America is no longer a democracy. Voting is irrelevant. Best case scenario: We're a plutocracy, a government ruled by the wealthy, the richest 1%, the Forbes 400, the influential wealthy elite, while the other 99% are their "servants." Meanwhile, the inflation-adjusted income of wage-earners has declined for three decades.

Worst case scenario: America's no democracy and as a result of the meltdown and the surrender of our power to Wall Street's new Disaster Capitalism we are morphing into what one WWII dictator called "corporatism," a "merger of state and corporate power," kind of like what's going on now with Goldman Sachs' ex-boss as de facto president.

Wolves in sheep's clothing
Yes, a strong charge. But like a lot of our readers, I don't like what's happening to America. I'm a patriot. I volunteered for the Marines. Served four years. Volunteered for Korea. I don't like how our freedoms, rights and value system are being subverted in the name of greed, arrogance, self-righteous intolerance and other false gods.

We know for the last eight years disaster capitalists ignored obvious warnings of a coming meltdown. They apparently planned it. They road the bull, got very rich. Now they have the ultimate disaster capitalist weapons, trillions in tax money, virtual control of government.

That's why I fear we're on the edge of a dangerous line between Wall Street's version of disaster capitalism and a toxic "merger of state and corporate power." The wolf is in sheep's clothing. Wall Street pretends we're a democracy. Yet America more closely resembles the kind of "corporatism" that Laurence W. Britt wrote about five years ago in Free Inquiry magazine.

We adapted his historical analysis of 14 key traits for today's discussion. Notice how they have a huge impact your investments and retirement:

Wall Street rich get first priority
Think "bailout." Wall Street's greedy con game spins out of control globally. Millions of homeowners misled, lose. Who gets hundreds of billions first? Wall Street's con men.
National security obsession
Think of the expansion of executive powers in the name of national security: Preemptive wars, wiretapping private citizens, Gitmo, torture; driven by a dark wealthy neocon elite.
Superpower with massive military
Think of our $3 trillion Iraq/Afghan War. Disaster capitalists love the thrill of military power. We outspend all nations, over half the federal budget to strut before the world.
Extreme nationalism
Signs are everywhere: Flags, lapel pins, "support the troops" slogans, all to get huge military budgets passed. Challenge them and you're un-American
Rally the masses by scapegoating enemies
Think "axis of evil," mushroom clouds, "Islamofascists," more terrorist attacks on the homeland. Propaganda creates "enemies" in the public's mind and distracts from real issues.
Corruption and cronyism
Think earmarks, no-bid defense contracts, paid mercenaries outnumbering military in Iraq, superlobbyist Jack Abramoff, biofuels, bridge to nowhere, millions donated to campaigns.
Obsession with crime
Think of prison-building as just another investment opportunity, rather than focusing on reforming our criminal justice system. Stoke irrational fear of criminals and extremists.
Labor and low wages
Think corporate earnings versus the wages paid to workers. No "trickling down," leaves more for tricklers: Rich insiders, stockholders. Wages dropping as CEO salaries skyrocket.
Contempt for human rights
Think of abuses of habeas corpus, loss of right to trial, bogus charges, plus "demonizing" the victims, all in the name of national defense and homeland security.
Mass media manipulation
Think of leaking false information, Joseph Wilson, Valerie Plame, Scooter Libby, Colin Powell's United Nation's testimony, Condoleezza Rice's mushroom clouds, WMDs, all to suppress the truth.
Obsession with sexism
Think of paternalism, antigays, antiabortion, subordinate women -- then codify the system as the law of the land reinforcing a male-dominated society, punish violators.
Disdain for intellectuals
Think of conservative intellectuals Francis Fukuyama and Bill Buckley. Contrast them to Sarah Palin and Joe Sixpack conservatism, Bush's funding cuts for arts and science education.
Religion in government
Think of all the faith-based programs versus antiscience in drug approvals, creationism vs. evolution, Ten Commandments enshrined in public buildings, public money to churches.
Fraudulent elections
Think of police and prosecutorial intimidation and threats to voters, challenging minority voters, ballots disappearing, party election officials committing outright fraud.
Yes, officially America is still a democracy. We have enough signs and rituals to support that illusion. But the truth is America has become a plutocracy run by and for the wealthy. And since Wall Street's Disaster Capitalism coup de grace, we are rapidly morphing into a dangerous new government.

Oh sure, there's a couple Republican hanger ons, but they're much like David trying to toss rocks with a slingshot at Obama and the Democrats. They have taken over, thanks to the sheeples known as American lackies. Also thanks to the Republicans themselves and complete failure when they ruled in part. Yes, they only ruled in part, part of that failed 8 years had to do with Democrats also who gave carte blanche. That included many of the Dem leaders today. Pelosi, Reed, Hillary, et al, either had no answers themselves these past 8 years, or were part of the failure we now find ourselves in. But they benefitted from that very system they were in, the Republicans did not as we attest today.

All that rhetoric on Inauguration Day and big red smiling faces, were the very faces that have screwed us yet again. It's a cycle that lives off itself. They are currrently gonna buy our way out of the recession, Obama etal and coharts but purchasing millions of bucks of condoms and landscaping the white house. There is no voice to oppose this, not yet anyway. The Republican leadership was left with 2 wimps in charge. Boehner and McConnell. These are the same two party yes men from the past. Where's the leadership in America today? Does anyone care? Obama is sliding into reality and he's been in office less than a week. His two major moves!! Close a prison for terrorists without knowing where to send them. And purchasing a stimulus of condoms. Sounds like fun, and maybe why all those red and smiling Dem faces?? Where it's at now is Israeli airstrikes into Gaza on Hamas. They even bombed the Hamas leadership's homes yesterday. Many casualities, and mostly civilian so far. Hamas has prepared for this, but how can they truly prepare for war with Israel?

This was all set in motion after Israel gave Gaza back to the Palestinians in the South. Hamas set up shot and has continually fired rockets into Israel. Hamas doesn't respect Israel's right to exist. A sticking point. Why can't we just all get along? Because they never have. Will they ever?

How will the Obama Administration and Hillary handle this one? The Israeli/Palestinian crisis has been a complete failure for the Bush years. But who's been successful or who would be today? In some respects, seems Israel is attacking at a political time, the gap between administrations and less outcry in the US. The US population themselves have tired of war, talk of war, and wars period. The US has domestic problems right now. Does anyone care currently? Seems even the Arabic states have turned a deaf ear to this one. Hamas has been a thorn in Egypts side as well, so let Israel do the dirty work.

In the meantime, Israel must concern themselves and not forget the Northern front with Lebanon and the Iranian and Syrian backed Hezbollah. Sounds like Israel is sandwiched, but since when have they not been? Remember Louise on the SHM?

Ggg

Obama's idea of Change in Transition (15 replies)

I can only say, ha ha ha! so far. He ran on this platform of Change in Washington. Most, took that to mean a complete transition of the good ole boy and girl network of Washington insiders. Afterall, he pounded away at Hillary over her previous Washington experience. Yet wait! He's turning Washington into the Clinton Years. That's what he meant by change? He doesn't have much of an imagination afterall does he.

Holder, will be confirmed as the new AG. He's a tough former prosecutor and good overall atty, but a man with a load of past mistakes and baggage. The kid from Cuba mess and his Deputy job with Reno, not to mention his assistance in pardoning the rich dude in Switzerland on Clintos pardon list. He admits it was a mistake.

After railing against Hillary's experience, seems she is first up for Secretary of State, one of the more important posts in his Clinton cabinet, so I guess Barrack? Experience matters afterall doesn't it.

Here's the goofiest pick of all. Napalitano for Homeland Security. He says he likes her immigration experience? She's got experience alright. She let the illegals flow into this country until she heard the constituents outcry and uprising after dui murders on the hiways, cops shot down, an overloaded healthcare system with illegal aliens, 100 illegals to a home and coyote smugling, she finally got the message when it was too late. Jane is political savvy, little more. She battled our Sheriff over his attempt to enforce immigration laws.

But she got on the Obama bandwagon early and supported Obama over Hillary. Smart political move. She knows about as much about homeland security as Pee Wee Herman, but she's an Obama lacky like Richardson of New Mexico. McCain even supports her, but McCain is soft on immigration like she is, plus it was rumored she'd run for the senate against Mac in 2010. These things the rest of the country pays no attn to, just Gregg and the rest of my homies.

Obamas team is not Change in Washington, just a revisit to a not so popular past, otherwise Gore would be President. People today are hysterical, desperate, so welcome to Obama World of transition folks.

Ggg

It's a Mess! We knew it would be a mess didn't we. Congress and Washington can't seem to handle anything these days. What happened to Leadership? The more Paulson talks the more he sounds like a snake oil saleman. He's completely changed course on how to spend a trillion?? Can he do that? He pleaded for this similar to Colin Powell's presentation for War in the UN assmebly. Now, he's not gonna do what he said to Congress? This is like asking my wife for grocery funds, and then going to the race track with it.

The AutoMakers? Let them go under. They have paid workers far more than worth, CEO bonus's that never end. All while turning out a substandard product to Japans. I really don't care if the Autoworkers have to wash windows like the rest of us. This Country is bankrupt and printing money. The problem is a Country that was awash in a runaway sytem of credit and greed. Now we pay the price and head for the Dust Bowl of the 30's. Welcome home. Maybe we can come up with some Dad Funny stories along the way?

Is there still a war going on? How much does that cost us a week?

Ggg

Marty's got a grip on the unreal when he throws this incredible news at us. I wonder where he finds this stuff. The sad part is that he is right about the absurdity of it all. I think he is brilliant in his analyses, and funny as hell.
Jimmy
__

If you've been terrified by the thought of flying to grandma's and being stuck in a middle seat next to someone enjoyed Buttbusters 3 on his laptop, you can relax. Delta, JetBlue and now American Airlines are busy censoring the internet they're offering you up in the sky.

Like so much legislation opposing sexual rights, this is one more solution searching desperately for a problem.

The 19,000-member Association of Professional Flight Attendants recently asked American Airlines to add filters to its in-flight Wi-Fi access to prevent passengers from viewing porn and other inappropriate websites. Although a union representative says that attendants and passengers have raised "a lot of complaints" over the issue, the Association couldn't produce examples of actual problems.

Actually, in-flight censorship now starts on the ground. Earlier this year, the Denver International Airport started blocking access on its free Wi-Fi network to Web sites that officials deemed offensive.
The Denver Post points out that some of those questionable sites include Vanity Fair and the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue--both of which you can buy at airport newsstands.

So what airports and airlines judge "inappropriate"--my blog? Your blog? Sites relating to breast cancer, gay rights, the Daily Show? And what about the rest of what people do on their laptops? I'll be working on a talk I'm giving to social workers in Albuquerque next time I fly; what if the person looking over my shoulder is offended by my "Diagnosis & Treatment of Sexual Issues?"

Considering the billions of miles flown by U.S. passengers every year, we'd all know if there were an actual problem about in-flight porn. We all talk about the actual problems we experience up there--the pathetic food, dirty seats, lack of leg-room, hairy arms pushing us off the armrest. Anyone ever see--or know someone who saw--Chester the child molester up there?

Every flier knows that "Federal regulations prohibit smoking or disabling smoke detectors in the lavatories." Undoubtedly, censors would like to add "and no masturbating in those private little places, either." Might as well prohibit thinking about sex there as well.

Reprinted from Sexual Intelligence, © Marty Klein, Ph.D. (www.SexualIntelligence.org).

The War On Sex: Damaging Nebraska Day By Day (1 reply)

For those of you who like Dr. Marty Klein's essays, here's another to chew on:
__

I spoke in Lincoln and Omaha last week. Nice places, with nice people.

Their government is ignorant, vicious, and dangerous.

Nebraska governor Dave Heineman is apparently so frightened of sex, he wants to keep it as far away from his state as possible. His appointee to run Nebraska's Department of Health & Human Services is also obsessed with sex. The University's new administrator is right in line with their dangerous program to undermine the health of every Nebraskan.

Responding to only a few gentle questions, my Nebraska hosts gave me an earful about their government's War On Sex. Here's what they told me:
* The University has ended its funding of the peer sex education program. Almost 20 years old, it was attended by 17% of last year's seniors.
* The University has eliminated funding for free, confidential, anonymous HIV testing.
* The University still has no comment on whether it will deliver sex education or sexual health services on campus.
* Omaha's Douglas County now has the 5th highest per capita rate of gonorrhea in America. Its response: doubling its abstinence-only funding, which is proven ineffective in reducing STDs.
* The state publishes consumer information about diabetes. It has now removed 'erection problems' as a symptom of this dangerous and misunderstood disease.
* The state has changed its annual "sexual health update" conference to an "HIV/STD health update" conference.
* The state has changed its Medicaid (health services for low-income people) intake form. It used to ask a single question: "would you like information about family planning services?" Now it has deleted this question as "unnecessary."

If you think the "War On Sex" is just a snazzy metaphor I use to discuss an abstract social issue, think again. Real people in Nebraska are suffering because of decisions made by other real people in Nebraska.

Reprinted from Sexual Intelligence, © Marty Klein, Ph.D. (www.SexualIntelligence.org).

What's the significance of this election? It's a Jackie Robinson moment. That's by far the most significance. What astounds me personally is that an Af-Am President seemed a long way off only 4 years ago. This isn't a moment that took decades to cultivate.

The next 4 years will be interesting in measuring the actual ability of Obama. Not only his promises but ideas with a Congress on his side. We learned in the previous Administration that a Congress and Administration on the same team isn't good. Maybe this time huh? Will we become a Socialist society of healthcare and medicine with 1/2 the population on food stamps paid by the over taxed wealthy?

Will the Iraq mess come to an end in 2 years? How bout Afghanastan? Obama doesn't have a whole lot of time to party over this. America is in trouble, and why he was elected. One night of partying and that's it!

Gregg

Yet Another Sneaky Law Designed to Discourage Abortion (9 replies)

How fortuitous for Greg -- a Marty Klein Ph.D. comment on abortion! :D

Just for the record, I am pro-choice. My third girl-friend had an abortion, fetus by her previous boyfriend and funding by me. I never regretted giving her the cash. She's kept in touch with me all these years, and she's been grateful all this time, too. She's gotten herself a great education, profession, and now, family. She did it all on her time, and that's was the right thing for her. What would have been right for that, fetus, we will never know. She made that choice and I supported it, both financially and emotionally.
Jimmy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yet Another Sneaky Law Designed to Discourage Abortion
Politics, as they say, makes strange bedfellows. No odd couple could be odder than Senator Sam Brownback ('premarital sex leads to depression and suicide', 'porn warps the brain') and Senator Ted Kennedy (insert your own tasteless joke about the condition of his brain).
And yet they're cosponsors of the Prenatally and Postnatally Diagnosed Conditions Awareness Act, which now awaits President Bush's signature.
The bill requires parents whose fetus is diagnosed with a profound impairment to receive information on the condition and on available support services. It also establishes a registry of families willing to adopt special needs children.
Why is this law necessary? Doesn't good medical practice provide information patients need? Doesn't good patient education provide information about local services?
The hypocrisy of this law is stunning.
Some 80-90% of fetuses diagnosed with Down's syndrome, spina bifida, and cystic fibrosis are aborted. Brownback sees this as a tragedy, cynically decrying how "America is poorer because of this . . . without [these childrens'] amazing gifts and their wonderful, unconditional love."
Of course, bearing such a child is certainly a viable option for parents who choose it. But Brownback doesn't mention the marriages torn apart, the families damaged, the opportunities for education, healthcare, and intimacy lost by parents (and their living children) who choose the option of bearing a severely disabled child. Isn't America "poorer because of this?"
Eighty to ninety percent--that's an amazing level of consensus about anything, which no politician or consumer advertiser could possibly create if they tried. Clearly, couples and families of all kinds, in every kind of circumstance, make the (often difficult) decision to abort these pregnancies.
Brownback, Kennedy, and their Congressional colleagues have intervened in the complex realities of these families. The law requires "patient education" that is not required for people seeking plastic surgery or hip replacements--both of which are far, far more dangerous and intrusive than abortion.
If Brownback is so concerned about undermining "the diversity of American life," he can start by reforming his punitive stance on immigration, his ignorant stance on maternity and paternity leave, and his discriminatory stance on funding health care for the poor.
No, his position is that the health of those not yet born is far more important than the welfare of those already born. Unable (as yet) to criminalize abortion, he is using the sneaky ploy of demonizing specific reasons for abortion, discouraging those who seek it through guilt and intimidation. Attempting to simply criminalize abortion is far more honest and honorable.
Kennedy should put his personal issues aside and support families as they currently exist, rather than attempt to legislate how families should look. He should be ashamed of ending up in bed with Brownback, a consistent enemy of what Kennedy has always stood for--science, justice, privacy, and women's rights.
The idea that America needs more profoundly disabled children is bizarre and dystopian. The idea that the government should be deciding whose fetus should be given special consideration is not humane--and certainly not "conservative."
And if you don't believe in abortion--I support you 100% in not having one. Preserving choices like yours is what makes America great.
Reprinted from Sexual Intelligence, © Marty Klein, Ph.D. (www.SexualIntelligence.org)
Is Porn to Blame for the Economic Collapse? (16 replies)
Greg and Lizzie, Thanks for your thumbs up on Marty's reprints. Now you've given me all I need to give you more (:D This one made me chuckle for a few hours, like funny but tragic indigestion. Jimmy
~~~~~~~~
The Wall Street Journal called me for an interview this week.

In South Africa, everything that goes wrong is blamed on a half-century of apartheid. In the Arab world, everything is blamed on Israel and the Jews. And in America, everything is blamed on internet pornography.

Since 2000, "morality" groups, cynical politicians, misinformed feminists, and lazy journalists have claimed that internet porn was causing America's ills: destroying marriages, tearing apart families, causing violence. These folks were--and continue to be--blissfully, willfully ignorant of the facts: that while America was being flooded with internet pornography, the rates of divorce, suicide, rape, and child sexual exploitation remained stable. None of these is worse now than it was eight years ago.

But the demonization of sexuality and pornography continues.

When the Wall Street Journal asked for an interview, I assumed it was about the psychological or sexual impact of America's financial crisis. Wrong--it was about "sex addiction." Yes, the largest economy in human history is melting (along with the planet), and the Wall Street Journal sends a reporter to cover so-called "sex addiction" and "porn addiction."

So in addition to freeway traffic, the awful lines in airports, the decline in kids' reading scores, and the poor performance of the New York Yankees, apparently you can also blame our economic disaster on sex--out of control, selfish, destructive sex.

That's America's real sexual addiction--blaming everything on sex.

To see the (rather lame) article, click here.

Reprinted from Sexual Intelligence, © Marty Klein, Ph.D. (www.SexualIntelligence.org).

Sara Palin Is Not A "Woman" (4 replies)

For those of you who share my interest in the writings of Dr. Marty Klein, here is his latest commentary on Sarah Palin. I'm curious to hear your reaction!

Dr. Klein states:

I am stunned by the number of seemingly-rational people who want to vote for Sarah Palin "because she's a woman." It's about time, they say. It'll be exciting, they say.

These people need a course in how democracy is supposed to work.

Take Iraq. Elections there are meaningless because tribal and ethnic loyalty outranks any other consideration. Given the chance to vote, Sunnis "vote" for the Sunni candidate, Shias "vote" for the Shia candidate, and so on. It's the same in the regressive parts of the Balkans: Ethnic Albanians voting for ethnic Albanians, ethnic Serbs voting for ethnic Serbs, etc.. No consideration of candidates' strengths or what they stand for. In such societies you don't need an election, just a census.

The second Sarah Palin takes office, she won't be a "woman"--she'll be an ideology, whether it's pro-war, anti-choice, anti-glacier, or anti-moose. She'll be a philosophy. She'll be beholden to her major donors. It won't matter if she's a woman, a man, or some other gender.

People who imagine she'll be loyal to some concept of gender are completely misguided. There is no consensus among American women about what they want from a President, anyway. Whether it's about abortion, education, or the right to nurse in public, American women are divided. There is no "women's issue" on which a "woman" president can confidently depend.

The only good reason to vote for Palin is agreement with her ideas about running the country--you know, start a few holy wars, drill for more oil, and wait for the Rapture to announce who won. Voting for her because "it's about time" a woman had a chance is like driving your car off a cliff because "it's about time" you had some excitement. That appears to be Los Angeles N.O.W. President Shelly Mandell's reasoning. She isn't a traitor to women--she's a traitor to thinking.

Of course, there were plenty of people who wanted Hillary Clinton for president because she's a woman. This was equally foolish. Clinton is no more a "woman" than Palin--her presidency would also be driven by ideology rather than ovaries, albeit a different ideology. And just as Palin's nomination should get no cheers from people interested in peace, justice, or civil rights, Clinton's almost-nomination shouldn't have pleased conservatives who happen to be women.

America is in bad enough shape without using the tribal allegiances of a Kosovo, a Rwanda, Macedonia, or South Ossetia to choose our leaders. I don't care if the finger on the nuclear button sports nail polish or calluses; I want the finger attached to someone who will defend the Constitution rather than shred it.

People who vote for a candidate's gender, race, or ethnicity don't understand democracy. Maybe the reason America hasn't been able to export democracy lately is because we don't have nearly enough of our own.

Reprinted from Sexual Intelligence, © Marty Klein, Ph.D. (www.SexualIntelligence.org).

Truth about Build Up to War (6 replies)

Since the war went bad, or lingered similar to Nam but with less casualties and fewer Americans involved, it's often come down to the cheap easy, "you fur it or against it back then?"

I remember shortly after 9/11 I couldn't find a car without an American flag on the windshield or antenna. Some were bigger than others, like Old Glory mounted in the back of pick-ups. Lizzie and I even talked about this craze at the time way back yonder days. Where did they all go? They've been gone for quite some time. Gregg did not go that route, and people would ask me, "why don't you got one, of all people why don't you fly one in your living room window also?" I viewed it as Patriotism on the Cheap. I knew it wouldn't last.
Even if Mission had been Accomplished it wouldn't last. That's the American way and the fickle nature of our people and especially on the subject of War.

But all that's given way to another Cheap. Were you fur it or against it? If you were fur it, you were stupid, if you were aganist it, you were enlightened? Really? Don't think so. Being against it was a gamble, nothing more or less. Unless you were an anti-war peacenik who wouldn't fight over your wife being taken hostage, it was a gamble to be against it. Win some, lose some.

Where did all those pro-War and flag waving Patriots go? They are enlightened yet again in another direction and have hidden the past, won't talk about or lie about the past. Those same Americans are the fickle voting block in a free society.

That war was supposed to be easy and quick. We had the Gulf War victory in our sights and Nam? Well, Nam was that War when America was weak, wasn't it.
We had already delivered a quick knockout punch to Iraq once before and this one was for keeps. You never hear people talking about being against the Gulf War do you?

For the next 10 years, Bush Sr. was reminded and taunted for his decision not to go into Baghdad when he had a chance. Where are all those ninnies at today? Bush Sr. had the perfect and common sense strategy at the time. "To go into Baghdad, break down the govt infrastructure of Iraq would be not only to prolong a tenuous War, but run the risk of a broader confict." Bush Sr. was seen as weak from that moment on by many of the same flag waving Patriots who have changed their colors today, and now against it.

Ggg

Obama wants it badly, but why? It's on Foreign Policy and McCain's strong point. I think Obama is just showboating yet again. He has failed miserably in face to face encounters with McCain and he won't do Town Hall meetings with McCain. Obama and his surrogates know that his strength lies in the state of affairs today and his ability to give a speech on par with Evangelical Preachers. In other words, Obama is a nay sayer, and reminder of how bads things are and he's gonna save you, but how exactly is what's missing.

I took note of Letterman the liberal making of fun of McCain's no show. But I remember another time about Letterman. I remember when he broke down boo hooing when remembering his recent heart bypass surgery. Here's a man, a liberal, with the best heart surgeon in the world doing a heart bypass and little Dave cried like a baby in his mommys arms. Dave lost credibility forever in Greggs eyes because Gregg remembers everything. That moment reminded me of when Dice Clay broke down in tears on Arsenio Hall, and his career ended that night.

McCain has done more segments and appearances on shows than any candidate in history, so reason to hug Obama and ask him about Dad? What else does this guy know?

Ggg
