Would Audio or Video Help in Finding a Good Psychotherapist?
In answering the question: "Do you feel that having an audio or video with a professional listing would help you (if you were a potential client) make a better decisionin choosing a counselor or a therapist?", Dini answers:
In short my answer would be "NO." Not on iota. Not a single bit. A therapist or counselor could say or do whatever they wanted in an audio or video marketing piece and it would be nothing more than that to me; a bit of advertising by someone trying to obtain my business. I wouldn't take it any more seriously than I take any commercial on the television.
What would and has helped me make a FAR better decision a couple of times since the first time around has been obtaining names and references from professionals and friends whom I trust, making appointments with those people, meeting with them face to face and eye to eye and asking whatever questions I may have, and observing their responses and MOSTLY being aware of my responses to them. Am I comfortable? Do I feel safe? Is this man or woman someone who I feel I could say anything to? Who would be compassionate but also able to challenge me when appropriate? That and much more than a print, audio or video marketing device could ever tell me. Good old fashioned gum-shoes "do your homework" finding and choosing a therapist or counselor.
To be honest, audio or video used to solicit clients might kind of turn me off (versus being used as an educational and informational tool as is done on this website which I think is a GREAT use of it and of great benefit).
