Witness Abuse and Your Child or Children

In the SHM Community Forums, Jimmy shared some thoughts about how domestic abuse can be considered child abuse. He said, "Did you know that domestic violence wintessed by a child is considered child abuse by many experts?"

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence has designated October as
Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Moreover, the recently publicized divorce
proceedings of Paul McCartney and Heather Mills have highlighted allegations of
domestic violence. While these allegations are shocking and are very unfortunate
if true, accusations of domestic abuse are oftentimes about money and children.
Allegations may be leveled to get a financial "leg-up in a divorce case.
Although no-fault divorce is now the norm in most states, abusive behavior can
impact financial determinations such as alimony payments and property
settlements.

Additionally, experts now believe that violence against a spouse in the presence
of a child (even an infant) constitutes child abuse. Thus, allegations of
spousal abuse have large implications in family court decisions concerning the
best interests of a couple's children.
