How Will Medicaire Pay for a Parent to go to a Nursing Home?

With my Grandmother, who was well into her 90's and on Medicaire, we had to wait until she fell (in my aunts house). The ambulance had to come pick her up. Once admitted by ambulance, the Medicare people assigned her to a nursing home. That's how we were told it worked in Florida. We tried to get her admitted before falling like that, but they refused.I am just guessing here, but I think they measure disability with 5 criteria, like walking, dressing, feeding, bathing and toileting oneself. If the person can't do a certain number of those, the criteria are met. If they can do all of them, then the elderly person must wait for an emergency. I don't know if Medicare has different laws in different states. You'd probably get the full low-down if you call Medicare and find out exactly what they require in your situation. I hope that helps.SHM Staff asks YOU: What do you know about the criteria used by Medicaire before they will pay for a nursing home?

  1. That's terrible! An elderly person shouldn't have to fall to get the care they deserve. Though I can understand criteria need to be met before admission to a nursing home, age should have been more than enough in this case.
