Gay Fears of Hate Crimes

In the SHM Community Forums, Joanne expressed her affection for gay people who lived in the same fear being felt by black people in the society. She said:

I think you are right, Gregg. Some hetero men are afraid of gays. Like most of us, when faced with something we don't know or understand, we fear it. In an attempt to overcome what we fear, we put it down, laugh at it, mock it, ridicule it.

If those hetero men stopped themselves long enough to realize that gay men are men first and gay second, they might actually get to like some of them.

Things with gays are much like they were with Black people 50 years ago. When I was a kid, I didn't know about Black people. I didn't actually see any Black people until I was in my teens. Talk about being lily white…then we had 1 token Black kid in our school.

Good thing he was extremely handsome, but he suffered because he was like an animal on display in a zoo, and he lived in fear.

He was at my house once and when our garage door opened unexpectedly, he bolted out of the house and out our back door faster than lightening. We all sat there, looking at each other. Why did he leave like that?? We eventually found out that he was afraid my parents would see him in the house and call the police.

My heart broke that night, for him and the fear he had to live with because people like me feared him.

I think a lot of gay people live in that same sort of fear, because heteros fear them and put them down of worse yet, commit unspeakable, unthinkable hate crimes against them. It is all very sad.
Gay people are some of the nicer people I know.
