AN INTERVIEW WITH HILLARY NORFLEET

SHM AWARD WINNER: Design Staffer of the Month

Question:

Tell us a bit about your job at SelfhelpMagazine.

Answer:

I began my internship in the promotions department in July of 1999. I am now Webmaster of TelehealthNet. Sister site to SelfhelpMagazine, TelehealthNet is a leading provider of eHealth information to organizations, associations, professionals, vendors and those they serve.

I am also Assistant Co-Webmaster at Self-help Magazine, which means I back up our System Administrator and Webmasters. Both positions require a wide range of skill sets including coding news articles, validation, link checking and implementing new features. I oversee and assist new interns, create templates, update pages, research log file activity and promote both sites wherever and whenever possible.

Question:

What excites you about your job?

Answer:

Definitely the opportunity to learn! Since I began working with "da crew" I've learned how to create a database with mySQL, use CGI to set up random image scripts, submit to search engines effectively, research and create optimal META tags and so much more. The support of my co-workers gives me the confidence to accept new challenges without hesitation.

The opportunity to work remotely is another huge benefit. I've got three children, ages 7 - 12. I'm Leader to a troop of 12 Girl Scouts and heavily involved with my community. It's a wonderful thing knowing I can run to the Junior High Band performance, dash off to confirmation class, organize the second grade Halloween party and take my scouts on a field trip in a weeks time without missing work!
