Phil Rich, Ed.D., MSW, LICSW

Phil Rich Phil Rich holds a doctorate in applied behavioral and organizational studies, and is a licensed independent clinical social worker with over 20 years professional experience. He holds a diplomate in clinical social work and a specialist credential in substance abuse, and is an approved supervisor for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Phil is an experienced therapist, working extensively with adults, adolescents, families, and couples, as well as group therapy and psychoeducation, and has worked in outpatient, inpatient, residential, and partial hospital settings. He has worked as an inpatient therapist on a women's psychiatric trauma unit and adolescent inpatient and residential units, as well as a general hospital emergency room where he administered psychiatric evaluations and provided emergency care, and as a therapist and supervisor in outpatient clinics and programs . He is an experienced diagnostician, and has worked with many different diagnoses, ranging from adjustment, conduct, and personality disorders to dissociative identity disorder, schizophrenia, and Asperger's syndrome. He has also worked with eating disorders, substance abuse, and sexual offenders, and has a wide range of treatment experience. He currently maintains a private outpatient practice, serving the Northampton and Amherst areas of western Massachusetts.

In addition to his work as a clinician, Phil served as a program director for 14 years, and is currently the clinical director of a large residential treatment program. In these roles he has provided strong clinical and administrative supervision and leadership, designing and administering a number of treatment programs. He has also been active over the years as an instructor and presenter, has held adjunct faculty positions, and consulted to and provided training for many different organizations. Phil is the primary author and series editor of the eight books in the "Healing Journey" series published by John Wiley & Sons. These are journaling self help books that focus on life passages and issues, and promote the use of the therapeutic journal as a means for personal growth, self expression, and problem solving and as a self help tool to help people through difficult times in their lives. The books in the current series focus on journaling for individuals and journaling for couples, divorce, grief, menopause, job loss, retirement, and addiction.
