Kelly B. Cartwright, Ph.D.

Specializing in child development, Kelly B. Cartwright, Ph.D., is a full-time faculty member in the Psychology Department at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. She teaches and advises students in the Early Childhood Psychology program, is an active researcher, and is a member of the graduate faculty. Dr. Cartwright specializes in cognitive development, including language, literacy, and the development of gender knowledge. She has taught such courses as Human Growth and Behavior, Psychology of Early Childhood, Child and Adolescent Psychology, and Gender Development.

In her research, Dr. Cartwright investigates individual differences in, and the development of, various cognitive processes. Additionally, she is interested in the impact of social and environmental factors, such as family interactions and gender, on cognitive development. For example, Dr. Cartwright has investigated the processes by which preschool children learn the meanings of new words, the cognitive mechanisms involved in children's reading comprehension, and the differing roles of early literacy experiences in female and male students' reading skill.

Dr. Cartwright holds a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Arkansas. She is a member of the Society for Research in Child Development, the International Reading Association, the National Head Start Association, and the Association for Women in Psychology. Dr. Cartwright has made numerous presentations at national and international research conferences, published professional articles, and provided guest lectures and workshops on various topics in child development for university and community groups.
