Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Purpose and Policy

SelfhelpMagazine is a service-oriented, educational forum written by behavioral health-care professionals, students and our readership. This work has been a labor of love on the part of all hundreds of authors and staff members, who have shared the common goal of bringing science of psychology to the general public in an easy-to-read format as self-help information.

SelfhelpMagazine started as Practical Psychology Magazine, on 11/1/94. The Internet community's response was so overwhelmingly positive, we decided to move to another host with more hardware and greater capacity to serve you. We have changed names through the years from Practical Psychology Magazine to Selfhelp & Psychology Magazine to finally, SelfhelpMagazine, for which we could purchase an easy-to-spell domain name

It is the policy of the SelfhelpMagazine Article Department Editors to give preference to articles that integrate various perspectives on any given issue. Our goal is to broadly educate our readership about issues by publishing an overview of various problem areas, with the widest possible range of research-based, practical solutions. Therefore, articles matching this editorial policy are given precedence over other article submissions.

We also do not encourage our readership to make direct contact with our  authors. Since most of our articles come from authors whom we have never met, we are not in a position to do anything more than we do, that is, publish the work they have sent to us. We cannot speak to their credentials or skills as psychotherapists, clinicians or practitioners, or even comment on their ability to respond to one of our readers with professionalism. Therefore, it is our suggestion that the reader beware and proceed at their own risk if they choose to make contact with the author of any of the articles we make available on the Internet.

Furthermore, the opinions expressed in SelfhelpMagazine are those of the authors and/or columnists, and do not necessarily represent the positions of the publisher, editors, or other contributors. Author's names, addresses, and/or contact numbers are also often published with articles. Authors fully accept responsibility for any & all consequences of their actions if contacted by SHM readers, attest to holding copyright to their materials by the act of submission of articles with their name attached, and hold harmless the SelfhelpMagazine owner/publisher/staff. SelfhelpMagazine is owned by Pioneer Development Resources, Inc, a Nevada corporation.

2. How do I access the magazine?

You must have access to the World Wide Web. If you do not, contact your server and ask if such access is available through them.

Often, universities offer such a service free to its students, academics and staff. If you don't have that sort of facility available to you, you can buy a connection through one of the numerous Internet Service providers (ISP). Most Internet Access Providers, such as Earthlink, AOL (and thousands of others) offer access to the World Wide Web. Access can range in price from about $10 per month on up, depending upon what various Internet services you want them to provide.

You will also need a program on your computer that allows you to travel through the Internet. Usually these programs are available free of charge from the server who sells you an account. These programs are usually shareware, or free, and available from the Internet itself. Upgrades are also available from the Internet. Other programs can be purchased from computer stores, and usually come with a manual for ease of use.
